These signs do not confirm a specific fault, but they help show whether a mechanical check is worthwhile.
- The latch is marked or shiny on one side, a sign that it rubs as it enters the strike plate.
- The door only opens if you push or pull it while pressing the button.
- The strike plate has loose screws or has shifted out of line with the latch.
- When you operate the lock you can hear the mechanism, but the bolt does not retract.
- The key is hard to turn or leaves the bolt halfway.

What to avoid when trying to fix a JIS fault
- Do not pull the door hard while the release is buzzing, as the latch and strike plate take more strain and may become distorted.
- Do not touch cables, power supplies or electrical components, as these must be checked by an installer.
- Do not file the latch or enlarge the strike plate opening, as the lock may then fail to hold the door.
- Do not keep pressing the control over and over if it does not open, as you may overheat the mechanism without solving anything.
- Avoid lubricating inside the lock with just any product, as it could affect the electrical side.
