Escutcheon installation in Torrevieja: what we do and when

The escutcheon is the part that surrounds and protects the cylinder on the outside face of the door. To do its job it must cover the cylinder properly, the cylinder must not stick out more than the escutcheon allows, and it must be firmly fixed. Before fitting it we check the type and size of the cylinder, the thickness and material of the door, the lock and how it will be fixed. An escutcheon makes attacks on the cylinder harder, but it doesn’t make the door impregnable.

Door with no escutcheon or a damaged one

If the door has no escutcheon, the cylinder is exposed. If the escutcheon is loose, broken or turns, it no longer protects properly. Send a photo of the outside face of the door and another of the inside face.

Cylinder replacement and escutcheon check

When the cylinder is replaced, we need to check that the new one fits the escutcheon and doesn’t stick out too far. If they aren’t compatible, we consider replacing one of the two.

Choosing an escutcheon model

We explain the models compatible with your door and cylinder and how they differ. We only mention certifications or features that appear in the manufacturer’s documentation.

What an escutcheon installation quote depends on

The price is given before we start, with VAT on top, and depends on the escutcheon, whether the cylinder needs replacing, the location and when you request the service.

Model and dimensions

The model chosen and its dimensions matter, and they must match the thickness of the door and the cylinder.

Compatibility with the cylinder

If the current cylinder sticks out or doesn’t fit, it may need replacing at the same time; in that case the price changes and we tell you beforehand.

Fixing and installation

The type of fixing and the door material affect the fitting. If extra drilling or adjustments are needed, we tell you beforehand.

How we work

How an escutcheon installation works, step by step

1. Tell us about your situation

Send photos of the escutcheon or the cylinder from the outside, of the inside face of the door and of the door edge with the door open. If you know the brand of the cylinder or escutcheon, mention it.

2. Go over the options and conditions

We suggest compatible escutcheons and give you the price before we start, with VAT on top.

3. Agree the work and check it together

Once the price has been accepted, we arrange the installation. If something comes up while fitting the escutcheon that changes the price, we explain it and don’t carry on without your agreement. When we finish, we check with you that the key turns properly with the escutcheon in place, and payment is made then.

What to check after the escutcheon has been fitted

  • That the key goes in straight and turns all the way without rubbing against the escutcheon.
  • That the escutcheon doesn’t move or turn when you try to shift it by hand.
  • That no screws are accessible from the outside and that on the inside the fixings don’t get in the way of the handle.
  • If the escutcheon has a cover or its own key, that you are shown how to use it.

Everyday use after the job

  • When you put the key in, guide it towards the centre of the escutcheon’s opening without resting it on the edge.
  • If your escutcheon has a cover, leave it closed when you go out and open it gently before inserting the key.
  • When cleaning the door, avoid harsh products or scourers on the escutcheon and rinse well around the keyway.
  • If you see the escutcheon starting to move or a new mark appears around it, let us know without waiting for it to get worse.

Guide to preparing your escutcheon installation enquiry

Before calling to have an escutcheon fitted

By looking at both faces of the door you can gather the details that affect the fitting.

  • Whether there is already an escutcheon and whether screws are visible on the outside or only on the inside.
  • How far the cylinder sticks out from the door or the current escutcheon.
  • Whether there are mouldings, glass or decorative panelling around the lock.
  • Whether the handle or knob shares a plate with the cylinder or is separate.
  • Whether there is free space around the lock on the inside face for the fixings.

Escutcheon warning signs worth describing

A protector in poor condition can give a false sense of security; describe its condition even if it seems like a minor detail.

  • The escutcheon turns or moves when you touch it.
  • There are visible or loose screws on the outside face.
  • There are dents, tool marks or distortion around the cylinder.
  • The cylinder sticks out from the escutcheon or sits so deep that the key is hard to get in.
  • The cover over the keyway, on escutcheons that have one, won’t turn or gets stuck.

When it’s best to stop trying

If the escutcheon has turned or twisted and the key no longer goes in straight, pushing it in hard or knocking the escutcheon back into place can damage the cylinder behind it. It is also best not to pull off a broken escutcheon with tools. Leave the part as it is, use another door if you have one and tell us what has happened.

Situations worth explaining when you get in touch

An escutcheon can cause problems even if it isn’t broken. These situations are worth describing just as you notice them; when we check the door we confirm what is going on.

  • The escutcheon has gradually worked loose and now the key goes in crooked: tell us since when you have noticed it and whether it moves more when unlocking than when locking.
  • Since the escutcheon was fitted, the outside handle rubs against it or droops: explain whether the rubbing happens all the way through its movement or only at the end.
  • The outside of the door was painted or re-clad and the escutcheon now stands away from the surface: tell us what was done and whether you can now see a gap around it.
  • You don’t know whether the part around your cylinder protects it or is just decorative: send one photo from the front and another from the side, and tell us whether screws are visible on the outside face.

Brands you can look up for escutcheon installation

If you know the brand of the cylinder or escutcheon, it is usually engraved on the part itself; mention it when you get in touch. The linked pages cover brands we fit escutcheons or protectors from, but they do not mean that we are an official service.

What else can help when fitting an escutcheon

The escutcheon works together with the cylinder and the rest of the door; if you want to go beyond the protector, carry on here.

  • Security upgrade: useful if the escutcheon is part of a wider reinforcement of the door.
  • Cylinder replacement: relevant if your current cylinder sticks out too far or is worn.
  • Brands: helps you recognise the name of the escutcheon or cylinder you already have fitted.
  • Prices: explains what an escutcheon quote depends on; the door is checked first and the quote is given before anything is fitted.
  • Contact: to send us details of both faces of the door and of the cylinder.
  • Towns: find your town’s page to prepare your enquiry with tips suited to each case.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about escutcheon installation

Can an escutcheon be fitted to any door?

Not to all of them. We need to check the thickness and material of the door, the space around the cylinder, compatibility with the cylinder and how to fix it. If your door can’t take one, we tell you.

Does the cylinder have to be replaced as well?

Not always. It is kept if it fits the escutcheon, doesn’t stick out too far and is in good condition. If not, it is worth replacing it at the same time.

What information do you need to assess the fitting?

The photos from the first step are enough for an initial assessment. If there is already an escutcheon, make sure it can be seen in full, and if you know the thickness of the door, mention it.

Can a damaged escutcheon be replaced?

Yes, as long as the new escutcheon is compatible with the door and the cylinder. If the old one’s fixings can’t be reused, we explain beforehand how the new one will be fitted.

What affects the installation quote?

The escutcheon model, whether the cylinder needs replacing, the fitting and any adjustments needed, the location and the time of the call-out. We give you the price before we start, with VAT on top.

Is it worth keeping the escutcheon I already have?

It depends on its condition and whether it fits the cylinder. It can be kept if it is still firm, covers the cylinder properly and isn’t distorted; if it turns, has been knocked or leaves the cylinder sticking out, it is worth replacing. One photo from the front and another from the side help us assess it.

Does the door material affect which escutcheon can be fitted?

Yes. A solid wood door, a metal door or an armoured door with steel sheeting don’t offer the same grip or the same space, and glass or mouldings near the lock can leave little room. Tell us the material and whether the inside face has any cladding.

Can an escutcheon be fitted to a communal door?

It can be assessed like any other door, bearing in mind that many people use that key every day. Tell us whether the door has a door closer and whether the cylinder will stay the same.

Does the escutcheon change how the door looks?

Yes, it is visible from the outside and each escutcheon has its own shape and finish. If you care how it looks, say so when you get in touch so we can bear it in mind when presenting the options.

What happens to the holes from the old escutcheon if it is replaced?

It depends on where they are in relation to the new one’s fixings. When we check the door we can see whether they will be covered or left visible, and we explain this before fitting it.
